Bluewave Glider: Folding and Packing Away (2 ways of folding)

Folding The Bluewave Glider - Method One:

I have received several private messages from Glider 473cm owners that are struggling to fold and pack their kayaks back into their roller bags. When I purchased my Glider in summer 2020 it did not come with a roller bag, it came with an envelope type bag that simply wraps around the kayak. However, Bluewave has been in contact with me and has kindly offered to send me a roller bag to test and review.

Until I get the bag to try it out in anger, I cannot suggest the best way of folding the kayak for storage in the bag. This said I carried out a slight repair on the bow (front) keel this morning so while I had the kayak inflated I thought I would take the opportunity to photograph a second method of folding the craft, one of these methods should be suitable for fitting the kayak comfortably in the roller bag.

Furthermore, once I have had the opportunity to check out and test the roller bag I will upload a video that will include an unbiased review and my suggested method of folding the kayak for storage.

Folding The Bluewave Glider - Method Two:

Click photos to enlarge:

  • With the kayak deflated, lift the kayak up onto its side.
  • Push the base material inward with either your knee or hand which should create a  "W" shape in the kayak.
  • Push the top side wall downward to expel excess air.

  • Once you have the kayak relatively flat, it is time to start folding
  • The first fold should start just after the skeg track.
  • Continue to fold pushing the air forward towards the open valves.

Finally, when you are near the bow keel, fold the last section back over the top of the main body

As you can see in the photo, I use two 5cm x 2-metre straps to secure and cinch the kayak down,
