This is a no bells and whistles video update on how I’m progressing from day one to day four of my fishless aquarium cycle, using Fluval Cycle Biological Enhancer and Dr Tim’s Ammonium Chloride to establish a healthy nitrogen cycle.
Understanding the Nitrogen Cycle: Why It Matters...
Before we explore the solution, let’s recap the basics. A healthy aquarium relies on the nitrogen cycle, a natural process where beneficial bacteria convert toxic ammonia (from fish waste or decaying matter) into nitrite, and then into less harmful nitrate. Without this cycle, ammonia and nitrite levels spike, endangering aquatic life.
Traditional cycling with fish (introducing a hardy species to “seed” the tank) is risky. Even with careful monitoring, toxins can build up. A fishless cycle avoids this by using an ammonia source (like pure ammonia or a fish food soaked in water) to simulate waste, allowing bacteria to grow safely.
