If the latest headlines are true, Andy Burnham is considering a dramatic U-turn and exploring every possible option to block the early release of PC Andrew Harper’s killers. If that is the case, then it is about time. The petition calling for their proposed release to be stopped has now reached nearly three-quarters of a million signatures — and frankly, I’m astonished it isn’t already in the millions.
I’m trying to live a simple, stress-free life these days, but there are moments when you simply cannot sit back and say nothing. This is one of them.
How can anyone look at the brutal killing of a police officer who was doing his duty and conclude that the punishment should be anything less than the full weight of the sentence imposed? Where is the justice for Andrew Harper? Where is the consideration for his family?
Our justice system is supposed to protect the public and deliver justice for victims. Yet time and time again, ordinary people are left asking whether sentences for the most serious crimes are simply far too lenient.
Enough is enough.
I would willingly march through the streets of London for this cause. Not out of hatred, but because I believe passionately in justice, accountability and consequences. A life was taken. A family was devastated. A police officer never got to go home.
The message from the public should be crystal clear: If you commit a serious crime, you should expect to serve the sentence handed down by the courts. Commit the crime. Do the time.
