Kayaking, Preventive and regular maintenance

It was drummed into me in my early life, and it is not just a saying; it is a fact.

After every outing in my kayaks, I inspect, clean, and wash all of my kit. Yesterday, I checked all my kayaking equipment and cleaned and UV-coated my main kayak, the Aquatec Ottawa Pro.

Once or twice a year (or if they are very grubby), I use Polymarine Inflatable Boat Cleaner to thoroughly clean my kayaks. It is expensive, but it goes a long way.

Today, I checked and UV-coated my Story Ranger kayak as a work colleague will be borrowing it to join me for a day out on the paddle in a week or so.

I apply 303 Aerospace UV Ray Protector to my kayak twice a year. This powerful ultraviolet blocker prevents fading and cracking and restores faded colour and lustre. It can be used on rubber, fibreglass, tyres, plastic, leather, and dashboards.

UV coating protects dropstitch kayaks from degradation caused by sun exposure, extending their lifespan and preserving their structural integrity. The sun's ultraviolet rays can weaken and crack materials like PVC and Hypalon, which are commonly used in inflatable kayak construction. A UV coating acts as a shield, preventing this damage and ensuring the kayak remains strong and durable, even with frequent use in sunny environments.

Kayaking and Invasive Species:

Contaminated canoes, kayaks and other water sports gear and equipment can cause the spread of invasive species to new water bodies.

Kayaking, like other forms of recreational water activities, can unintentionally spread invasive species between different waterways. To minimise this risk, paddlers should follow the "Check, Clean, Dry" principle, which involves thoroughly inspecting, cleaning, and drying all equipment and clothing before moving between water bodies.

I remember sitting in my kayak at Flatford Mill and thinking I had stepped back in time. The view ahead of me was identical to John Constable's famous painting, The Hay Wain. It was as if Constable had captured the scene the day before. Moments like that make me realise how important it is to protect and preserve our countryside and waterways.
