Upnor Castle, no videoing allowed! When My YouTube Day Went Sideways.

Filming Fiasco at Upnor Castle: When My YouTube Day Went Sideways.

Bathed in sunshine, Upnor Castle stood invitingly, the River Medway murmuring a peaceful rhythm against the bank, the ideal setting for a day’s filming. Equipped with my camera and armed with historical knowledge, I was ready to create a documentary-style video for my YouTube channel, aiming to vividly share the story of this remarkable Tudor fort with my viewers.

Everything started perfectly. I arrived and began with some establishing shots of the river and the quaint village surrounding it. The light was glorious, the views picturesque, and I was already mentally narrating the opening sequence. I envisioned shots of me casually walking through the grounds, delivering snippets of history with an enthusiastic smile. This was going to be a fantastic piece of content!

My plans hit an immediate snag as soon as I entered the castle grounds. A staff member informed me that filming was prohibited both on the grounds and inside the castle itself. Disappointment washed over me; my vision for a smooth-flowing documentary instantly shattered. I attempted to clarify that this wasn’t a commercial project – I wasn’t selling anything, simply aiming to share information – but was told that public broadcast of the video required prior permission.

Leaving felt like a defeat. All my work – the carefully composed shots, the researched historical details I’d memorised, the scriptwriting and narration recording, the whole video idea – was for nothing. The day, which had begun with such promise and excitement for both creativity and history, ended as a complete loss.
