Since late November 2020, my DJI Pocket 2 has been my go-to camera for videoing while out walking, hiking, and camping. My DJI Osmo Action is only used while out on the water kayaking.
The camera I settled for is the Insta360 X3. In this video, I am trying out the camera and the Insta360 Studio software for the first time. The main use of this camera is to record my outdoor pursuits such as walking, kayaking, and camping. In this video I try and test the camera out by vlogging as I walk, then I used the studio software to re frame and add tracking, There has been no colour, fisheye, or audio correction. I also attempted a few drone-like shots with the Insta 3M selfie stick. This is a steep learning curb for me, as previously I would use a traditional style action camera whereby I would capture footage with the camera looking directly at the subject. So, this is my first impression of this camera, and the few accessories I took with me on the walk.
There are many tutorial videos that show How to Edit & Re frame 360 Videos, and how to use the in-app features such as tiny planet and hyperlapse, but these are of little interest to a person that wants to share the beauty and tranquillity of the surrounding countryside. I will rarely use the Insta360 Shot Labs, but I will try to be more creative using this camera within my usual video production style.
Basic editing in this video:
- 180° turn from selfie view.
- Use of motion tracking to follow me.
- Side turns.
- Basic drone type follow me.
I must apologise for a few errors in my length/distance calculations in this video, I often mixed up centimetres for millimetres, I put it down to having a senior moment 🤣. Hopefully, as I use this camera more often, my recording and editing techniques will greatly improve.
The Insta360 X3 video footage was reframed in the Insta360 app and exported in 4K (3840x2160) resolution, the bitrate was set to 100. The exported default (fisheye) video footage was then edited using the Cyberlink PowerDirector 19.
The settings I used to film this video footage on the X3.
- 5.7K resolution
- 30 frames per second
- Sharpness: Medium
- Bit Rate: High
- White Balance: Auto
- Exposure: Auto
